   Our History

"When parents bring their children to the daycare, they know that their kids are being properly taken care of and that they are receiving nutritious meals and snacks."

"In 1960 Reverend Donald Atkinson brought a request forward for the development of a community daycare in the United Mission Building in Whitney Pier. Executives on the board were optimistic, they knew that to advance the community as a whole they would have to offer residents what they needed and that was a place for parents to have their children cared for while they were at work.

Residents had no way of knowing it at the time, but it would take 12 years for their dreams to become reality.  The daycare opened in 1972 and would operate from the Missions building until 2000. Due to growing enrolment, more square footage was required. Finally, they found the location on Henry Street was the perfect location. With a few renovations, lots of fresh paint, and a little elbow grease, the building would become a warm and friendly place where children are given every opportunity to learn and grow.

Today, the daycare remains a vital part of the community - that is due in large to the efforts of a very dedicated staff. Linda Margettie is the director of the facility and is happy to be part of offering experienced childcare to the young people of Whitney Pier.

"The funny thing is, I attended this daycare when I was a child. I have great memories of growing up in the area and of the center. parents feel comfortable leaving their children and their children love being here." There have been a few changes in the time since Linda has been director, but the one thing that has remained consistent is the quality of care the children are receiving.  "When parents bring their children to the daycare, they know that they can rest assured, they know that their kids are being properly taken care of and that they are receiving nutritious meals and snacks while they are there."

Caring for children ranging in age from eighteen months to twelve years can be a challenge. Linda is never concerned, noting that her staff is the best in daycare and she relies on their skills and expertise. "They are very conscientious, they know what is going on and parents appreciate how much the staff love and respect their children."
